TURN 4 Turn 4 comp now available; jukebox updated

The response to Turn 4 at last Saturday's record release party was described by one attendee as "like skydiving with Jesus." So, head over to the Almost There store or straight to our Turn 4 page to get the only album clinically proven to fight the effects of scurvy, halitosis, and lumber lung.

Also ... check out our jukebox, which is updated with tracks from Turn 4 and the Rockland Eagles' Osaka Cocka Rocka, which we're happy to report has just gone Promethium in Japan. That's at least twice as good as Platinum. In your face, lesser metals!!!

BIG STAR TRIBUTE Coming Soon! Big Star tribute album and hoot night

This Tuesday, February 19, Almost There will officially release its homage to the godfathers of power-pop and indie-rock, Thank You Friends: An Almost There Records Salute To Big Star. Thirteen tracks of Memphis power meets Beatles pop that probes the underrated depth of the band's limited catalog. For a taste of the album, we've added 4 tracks to our jukebox and will rotate out songs until the night of our release party (see below).

The album's release will be followed by a record release party/hoot night on Saturday, February 23, at the Continental Club featuring 12 of our favorite local bands. (Check back soon for the confirmed list of artists who will be appearing). This year's hoot night is unique in that we're not only paying our respects to Big Star, but Cheap Trick and Mott The Hoople as well. Make your plans now because the Continental Club fills up quick and the fire marshall is working the door for us.

TURN 3 Turn 3 now available!

Almost There Records is proud to present our third compilation of (mostly) Austin indie rock and left-of-center pop. Turn 3 won't be officially released until Tuesday, August 28 ... and should be on iTunes by mid-September ... but because of a clerical error in the city's payola department, you can pre-order a CD from us right now. How many labels will exploit loopholes in the tax code to provide this kind of customer service? None, that's how many. More information, including the tracklisting, is available on the Turn 3 page.

To give y'all a flavor of Turn 3, we've added the 5 songs below to our jukebox ... which also contains samples from our other releases. More music is available on our MySpace page.

  • One Mississippi - 16 Ships
  • The Missing Tapes - Smell Of Something New
  • Li'l Cap'n Travis - Down The Hall From The Mountain King
  • Ramsay Midwood - Maybelline Grease
  • Mike Nicolai - Eye Roller

AUSTIN CHRONICLE - 6/8/07 Austin Chronicle salutes Mandible's rueful meditation on time-space formlessness ... just not in those words.

"A significant sphere in the Grand Champeen/Gourds/Prescott Curlywolf social orbit, Phillip McEachern's Mandible seesaws between simple (but not simplistic) melodies and spirited (but not spiteful) pound-it-out rock. Plus bong-friendly studio goofs that titles like 'Stupid Happy Clown' and 'Beelzebub Telephone' suggest. Opener 'Gone Out' pairs Springsteen with Tears for Fears, while 'Rubber Pants' goes AM radio sunny to tasty Tenacious D jam. 'Splinters' punks up Orange Mothers with Rob Bernard's breakneck guitar, and Tim Kinard's trumpet lends a Calexico flavor to 'Emerald City Hall.' As fed through McEachern's synthesizer, trumpet returns to prog "Walk Through Hell' out on an ELP limb. In other words, and especially at 14 songs in 38 minutes, (Here Come the) Mandible is all over the place. That's most assuredly one of its leading virtues, right with the winsomely oddball songwriting and overall intraband bonhomie."
